Traveling with my Daughter

Overall, Lian and I are having a great time. We've been with friends so she's been able to do other things than hang with me. We leave for France tomorrow and there is a girl she's been a pen-pal with (in French) for the past 6 months. They met when Lian was four and Maelle was 2. Lian will even go to school with Maelle on Friday. Me? I'll be sipping something with Nathalie while the girls are in school. On Saturday we're going to the "sea" in the south of France. A guy I met named Bernt from Germany will go with us. He and I met in Japan in 1985 and I saw him again in Munich in 1986. At that time, Nathalie was his girlfriend. We will all meet together again in Valance, France this weekend. Amazing....and I'm sure fun.

More fun in Brussels

We have now visited a 700 year old castle and had a great day at a Belgium version of the science museum - but way more fun. Wild kids on their last day of school. I was so glad not to be in charge of a classroom of kids. I did intervene in one situation - should have kept my mouth shut and let the kids beat each other up - but no. I had to intervene. Once a teacher always a teacher. Even when I don't understand them. In Brussels you'll hear Dutch a lot as well as French and sometimes English. Walking in the city you hear all kinds of languages. Very international. We are staying pretty close to the EU which is interesting too. Makes me realize how much I don't know about Europe. I do know that the euro is way more than the dollar right now. About 1 dollar to 1.45 euros. My money isn't going too far.

Famous site in Brussels

Walking around Brussles

Lian and I went on a long walk Sunday from one famous park to another. We ended up at a music museum. You put on earphones and then heard each instrument as your stood in front of it. There were old instruments, several from around the world and classical instruments as well. Very fun. Our lunch on the roof was wonderful. The lion in the photo was one of many sculptures in the park near the museum.

Photos of Brussels

Tractors in Brussels

Yesterday on our walk, Patty and I noticed a lot of tractors in town. Very unusual. The tractors were blocking the roads and really irritating the people of Brussels. We found out the dairy farmers were protesting a drop in price on milk which is not reflected with the stores but apparently is with the farmers. It's amazing to be here in the capitol of the EU.
Here's the story:

BRUSSELS, June 18 (UPI) -- Dairy farmers in Belgium rode tractors into the European Union capital Thursday, tying up Brussels traffic to protest falling milk prices.

The EU Observer said between 500 and 1,000 tractors held up traffic as they headed toward the Parc de Cinquantenaire. Traffic delays were reported on several roads, as farmers rode three abreast into the city, the report said.

Police met the protesters with barricades and parked armored vehicles. A summit of EU leaders is scheduled in Brussels starting at 5 p.m.

The demonstration has government approval so long as the farmers stay at least 300 feet from the meeting.

"We demand that the heads of state and government put the catastrophic situation of the milk market at the top of their priorities," said Romuald Schaber, head of the European Milk Board.

Farmers have been protesting a 30 percent drop in milk prices that have occurred while store prices have remained stable.

In addition, farmers want milk production quotas reinstated. The EU plans to phase out milk quotas through 2015, the EU Observer reported previously.

An EU official said the protest would probably not affect the meeting, which follows an agenda set six weeks in advance.

Bikes in Europe

This is actually a photo from Amsterdam. There were bikes everywhere with bike parking lots 3 stories tall. Everyone rode a bike from grandmas to mothers with 3 kids in the front of the bike. Men in suits, women in mini skirts. It was amazing - and no helmets.

Brussels

Having a great time with friends in Brussels. The brick streets are great to walk on. My friend and I have been walking in a nearby park on a daily basis. Wonderful food. Fresh flowers and veggies. This city is so international and we hear a lot of French, Dutch and English. Lian was a hostess at a party in this photo. She made a friend with a Russian gal and earlier in the week made a friend with an American gal living here who goes to a French Immersian school. They have lived all over the world. She's really doing well as we meet new people and have all sorts of new experiences. Today we went to a forest in the middle of the city. We were a bit annoyed to discover ticks - really small ones - on us. I've visited a grocery story, chocolate store, book store, and even a church fundraiser/thrift sale. Tons of touristy things to do as well. I just enjoy walking around the city.

Lian with Pieter in Amsterdamen

We made it. The6 hour flight wasn't so bad with our stop in Iceland. I noticed I had the only pink toenails with sandels in the airport. Other than being embarrassed about that that we were okay. I also ran into someone I knew who was heading to Sweden. Lian had some pretty bad airport eggs and we then took the 3 hour flight to Amsterdam arriving around noon. Lian and I spent 2 full days in Amsterdam on June 11th and 12th. A friend of a friend named Pieter met us at the airport and helped us get to our hotel. Amsterdam is filled with bikes, bikes and more bikes. It seems as if everyone rides to work on bikes. We saw people with three kids in big baskets on the front of the bike. No helmets (unless you saw an American) and yes - people riding bikes while talking on their cell phones. We only saw one wipe-out and I think he was drunk. I'll eventually post some photos.

While in Amsterdam, Lian and I visited the Anne Frank house which is quite the moving experience. It also would have been her 80th birthday on June 12, 2009. My mom turns 80 in December, and like Anne Frank, was born in 1929. It's hard to believe that my mom was in Montgomery, MN enjoying life in a small town while at the same time, Jews and others were being taken from their homes and killed through Hitler's concentration camps. In the room Anne Frank lived in during their time in the Amsterdam hidden rooms, she plastered photos of actors, Shirley Temple, and other things that were popular at the time. I imagine they were also popular with my mom too.

We walked all over the city on the beautiful brick paths next to the canals. We learned there are more canals in Amsterdam than in Venice. There were a few shops we checked out. Lots of fleece art, scarves, slippers, and toys. Check out this website: www.zij-aan-zij.nl
All the art was made by people with developmental disabilities. Beautiful works that blended silk and felted products. I should have bought a scarf. Still can I guess.
We went on a tour of the canals in the evening with Pieter. So many people in such a small space. It was nice to get on the water for a different perspective. Lian and I visited the Van Gogh museum too. What can I say. The amount of work that man did during his short life was amazing. I learned that he was the son of a preacher. I also learned that David Sedarus used his skull smoking a cigarette painting on the cover of his last book. I had no idea that was a Van Gogh.

We took a train to Brussels on the morning of the 13th. Saw lots of beautiful scenery of the Netherlands: cows, fields, bikes, paths, flowers and yes - even a few windmills. Europe has many of the windfarms we see in Iowa too: just not the quantity in one place.

Time for More Travel

Lian and I are leaving for Europe this week. We head to Amsterdam on Wednesday via Iceland. We will spend a few days there before leaving for Brussels on the 13th of June. Look for photos and stories of our trip on this blog. Hopefully we'll be able to keep it up and going with lots of wireless internet access all over Europe.
